The structure of my essay.

Hello!
So I have decided how I am going to structure my essay on the attachment theory:

First paragraph will be on a brief explanation of the attachment theory and Bowlby’s ideas on attachment will be outlined.

The second paragraph will be on the secure attachment style and will include how children can become securely attached (e.g with primary care givers offering a safe and supportive environment) and what the impacts of having a secure attachment style has on adults.
The third paragraph will be on the preoccupied attachment style and will outline the same as above.
The fourth paragraph will be on the dismissing attachment style and will cover the same issues as in the secure attachment style.
The fifth paragraph will cover the fearful avoidant attachment style and will also explore the impacts of the style on adults and how the style is developed.

The sixth paragraph will explore the resilience of attachment styles into adulthood and also look at how attachment styles may change and alter depending on who and what relationship an individual is in.

Through out the essay personal examples will be used to highlight the points made in each section.

If anyone had any suggestions on what else I could add that would be great.

Good luck guys!!

Clare.

Hi Clare,

There is an infant mental health conference (I'm actually attending) being held in Sydney in late October which is too late for blog 2 but there are some reknown Australian experts speaking about attachment theory. I thought this might be useful to you since you will have names of academics etc and search by their name/author etc to get the latest info on this topic.

The conference website can be found at:

Hope this is helpful.

Cheers
Karen

Greetings from the UK, Clare.

This is just to say that, if you don't know it already, Robert Karen's book:'Becoming Attached: first relationships and how they shape our capacity to love' (Oxford University Press) is an extraordinarily good account of the people and evidence behind attachment theory. It is very readable and exciting and manages to combine the great story of how the theory originated and progressed with great examples of children and people showing the various types of attachment, and a clear exposition of the theory.

He talks about the evidence for how parenting style affects things, and also about the extent to which it gets carried into adulthood.

I thought your celebrity examples were great by the way.

Best wishes,

Glenn Oldham (a perpetual and very aged student (52!))

(Your blog came up on the google alert I have which is set up for new webpages on 'attachment theory',- which fascinates me and which I have found hugely helpful in the last few years.)

Hi Clare,

An essay tip - make sure you establish early on exactly what the question / topic is; and likewise in the conclusion, make sure you draw the reader's attention to your key points, arguments, evidence, etc.

And great to see you're becoming famous, attracting international attention!!
